BHAGAVATHA DHARMAM

BHAGAVATHA DHARMAM (By Sadguru Sreemad Abhedanandaji Maharaj)
“Bhagavatha Dharmam’’ is a book containing 1060 soothras, (Axioms) which bring out the essence of Sreemad Bhagavatham. This is a translation of the book written in Malayalam.
Sreemad Bhagavatha Mahathmyam.
1) Ananda (happiness) exists internally within every man. But he wanders in search of happiness, among external objects like wealth, woman and home. 2) Jnana (knowledge) flashes in Man, at times; but it does not remain for long. So, it is difficult for those who follow the path of Janna to attain peace and happiness. 3) Fulfillment of the aim of human birth is Realization of Lord Krishna. 4) The ultimate benefit of worshipping idols of the Lord installed in temples as Archavatharas will accrue to us only when we are able to see the presence of the Lord in all living and non-living objects in the world. 5) All living beings are part and parcel of God. So the one and only goal of all beings is to become one with God. 6) In the present day world human life has become highly voluptuous. That is to say, man spends most of his life for gratification of the senses. It is, therefore, impossible for such men to reach God through the path of knowledge. 7) Those who live in luxurious houses, indulging largely in the material pleasures of the world, are not eligible for the study of the Upanishads. 8) It is dangerous for those who immerse themselves in carnal pleasures to practice Yoga. Bhogis (voluptuous persons) trying to become Yogis will definitely become Rogis (sick) 9) Every activity of man should be based on Bhakthi.(Devotion) 10) It is not a sin to live in the house; but to develop attachment towards the house is a sin. 11) Those who insult Bhakthi and indulge in worldly pleasures on the plea that “youth is the time for enjoying such pleasures and Bhakthi-Sadhana is for old age only”, will never get the taste of pure Bhakthi even after undergoing several births and deaths. 12) Do not get entrapped in the magic web of the world. The only method for it is to minimize your interest in worldly pleasures. 13) Let remembrance of the Lord be your regular habit. Set it as your life’s goal and realize it. 14) Man should perform all his actions on behalf of God. This is eternal law. When the doer of an action, loses even the feeling that he is doing it, that action gets transformed into Bhakthi. 15) Worship of the Lord should not become merely an action of the body. Mind should have the main role in it. Those who worship the Lord in this complete spirit, can bind Him with the rope of Prema ( Bhakthi) 16) In happiness as well as grief, God is Man’s constant companion; but man co-operates only when he is happy. 17)Those persons, who receive God’s grace, will never get attached to worldly pleasures. 18)Make it a habit to remember God before commencing every action. By doing so, it will become easy for you to remember God at every breath and every heart-beat. 19 Study of the scriptures, writing and thinking about them are good, but translating them into your life is better. 20) Death is inevitable. The attack of the God of death will definitely come any day. Therefore, await the arrival of death, just as King Pareekshit had done. 21) Fear (of death) will not approach any one who takes refuge in Sreemad Bhagavatham. 22) Remembrance of death will enhance our devotion and love towards the Lord. 23)Fear of death will not affect those Mahatmas who have conquered lustful tendencies. 24) If your mind is not merged in God, you cannot get rid of lust, anger and other negative feelings. 25) By regular practice, prepare yourself to meet death any time. 26) When your eyes, mind, words, deeds and wealth are put to proper use, you can defeat death and become ‘Mrithyunjaya’,(he who has defeated death) 27) By constant efforts, you can bring Ridhies (plenteousness) and Sidhies (superhuman powers) to remain permanently in your home. So waste no time and offer prayers to the Lord. 28)Re-birth occurs because of accumulated Vasanas (tendencies). Therefore, make all efforts to get rid of all Vasanas during this life-time itself. 29)God will be pleased with us, if we offer to Him anything that is most dear to us. 30) When evil tendencies and pleasure-mongering dominate our life, it becomes as dangerous as poison. 31) Unless you practice self-control and righteous living, your bookish knowledge is a mere waste. 32) Speak less; speak the truth. 33)Keep the mind pure by all means; because, mind remains even after death. 34)Observe Ekadasi day religiously. On that day, try to imbibe the feeling that all your sense organs and mind are surrendered to the Lord. (Ekadasa means eleven. Ekadasi means pertaining to eleven. i.e. five organs of knowledge and five organs of action plus the mind.) 35)By listening to the stories of Bhagavan's Glory, Bhakti (Devotion) arises in us.Then Jnana(Knowledge) and Vairagya(Dispassion) which are the off-springs of devotion also strengthens. 36) We must withstand the biological urges like hunger, thirst and sleep. 37)Our body is the temple of God ; eyes and ears are the doors for God to enter into it. We must, therefore, keep our eyes and ears pure. 38) Never complain about the circumstances in which God has placed us. Whatever be the circumstances, be always happy and contented .Constantly remember God ,who does only what is good for us. 39) If we surrender ourselves to God whole-heartedly, we will be able to shine forth like God Himself. 40) Hands which do not serve God or help fellow creatures, are no better than the hands of a corpse.By performing Sandhya-vandanam(prayers at sunrise and sun set) your intellect becomes sharp 41) Our main duty is to detach the mind from the worldly objects by any means and keep it in close contact with God . 42) Mind gets polluted by the cumulative effect of many many past births. 43)A man who is subservient to his sense organs gets tormented by several mental agitations. 44) Sinful men ultimately become ghosts. It is rather difficult for them to get liberation. 45)Departed souls get liberated through Gaya Sradham.( Obsequies performed at the holy place Gaya) 46) Married life will be happy and peaceful, if both husband and wife have the feeling that ‘we have joined together to serve God’ 47) We should constantly endeavor to destroy our vasanas (natural tendencies) and attachment to worldly objects. 48) Scriptures have said that the Jeeva (the life principle) is bound by seven knots consisting of Kama(desire), Krodha(anger) Lobha(miserliness), Moha(delusion), Mada(pride), Mathsarya (conflict) and Avidya(ignorance) .It is , therefore, necessary that these knots are broken off by constant Sadhanas(spiritual practices) 49) Listen carefully to the stories of the Lord. Assimilate them properly through meditation, and imbibe their contents in actual life. 50) Good things should be done most expeditiously. Never postpone anything for ‘tomorrow’. 51) Do not look at this world with an eye of desires and craving for enjoyment. When our vision is vitiated we can’t get divine vision. 52)Listen to the stories of God with one-pointed mind, so that you can forget the world of miseries at least for that time. 53) If a person succumbs to anger, he will immediately lose all his merits .So, both the story-teller and listener should be totally free from anger. 54) Study of the scriptures or their preaching to others will not yield any results. The greatness of the scriptures can be realized only when we put them into practice. 55) Do not bother about past actions or past births. It is enough if you can keep your present, free from faults.
First Skandham
56) Meditation of God’s form and recital of God’s names will easily infuse divine powers in man. 57) The end-result of Kama(desire) is unwholesome. By the mere thought of lustful persons, our minds also will become subjected to desires. 58) Make it a regular habit to remember the Lord everyday at dawn, at mid-day and at bed-time. 59) Repeated thought of the same form (of God) will make Sadhana easy and will yield quick results. 60) Worship all forms of God. But remember that all are different forms of the one and only God. While worshipping different forms of God, remember only your Ishtadevatha (that form of God which appeals to you most) 61) While meditating on your Ishtadevatha ,if you can’t visualize that form in your mind, continue the meditation and recite the holy names of that Ishtadevatha. 62) Let your words recite the Lord’s divine Names. Let your eyes see everything as different forms of the Lord. This practice will purify your mind very quickly. 63) Attraction towards worldly pleasures is the main reason for not getting full concentration during meditation of God. So, put in constant efforts to develop dispassion towards worldly objects. 64) Do not get upset even if you are not able to concentrate on God while meditating. It will be enough if you can reduce your thoughts on women and other worldly pleasures. 65) Temples are not meant for discussing worldly news and exchange of local gossips. They are sacred places intended to be used only for meditation and worship of God. 66) Never pray to God for selfish gains. 67) God at first takes away all our belongings and finally gives us everything. 68) Do not beg for anything to God. If possible keep a small idol of God with you always, so that you can maintain your devotion to God uninterrupted, at any place, whatever be the circumstances. 69) To feel happiness when you see others happy is evidence of Prema (true love). 70) Those who seek refuge in God whole-heartedly,will become happy and desire-less. 71) Devoid of Bhakthi (devotion), Jnana (knowledge) and Vairagya (detachment) are useless. 72) Hatred is man’s greatest enemy. 73) Listen to the stories of God. Also try to follow the principles underlying those stories in actual life. 74) Man’s spiritual uplift is impossible if he cannot get rid of anger. 75) Prayer to God should not be postponed till the completion of house-hold duties. Attend to those duties after finishing your prayer. If you practice this, all your actions will get transformed into prayer. Performance of duties, side by side with recital of God’s Names will then become easy. 76) If you don’t have the thirst or strong desire to see God, you won’t get the good fortune to see or come in contact with Mahatmas (godly men). Even if you get, it won’t serve any purpose. 77) Listen to God’s stories over and over again. Then devotion and love of God will take shape very quickly. 78) Women, wealth and children are hindrances to Thapas.(a life of penance) 79) Death means the day which indicates the end of your life. That can happen any day, any moment. Remember this and be ready to meet death at any time. 80) Those who lead a pure life will ultimately become one with God, the very source of purity. 81) Sinners get scared at the time of their death because all the sins they have committed will appear before them assuming fierce shapes. 82) If you get the good fortune to serve God all the 24 hours of the day, that itself is called Bhakti(devotion) 83) If your body alone is engaged in the service of God and your mind is involved in worldly affairs, you won’t get even an iota of happiness from that service. Those who do real service to God will not find favour with worldly things. 84) If love towards God has to be strengthened, love towards worldly objects should necessarily be given up. 85) There is no need to abandon the world. What should be given up by man is his desire for worldly things. 86) Attraction towards temporal things will hinder the spiritual progress of man. It entangles man and pulls him down. 87) Bhakthi (devotion) is another name for offering the best among best things to God. 88) Bhakthi, (devotion) devoid of Jnana (knowledge) and Vairagya (dispassion), cannot be effective. Worldly pleasures will stand in the way of Bhakthi. 89) If you want to be happy, you should give up your interest in worldly objects. 90) The plant of Bhakthi which grows with the aid of Jnana and Vairagya will yield flowers and fruits leading to God- realisation. 91) To increase your love towards God , you should listen to the stories of God’s incarnations, study them with keen interest, meditate on them and actually feel the presence of God through them. 92) The very sight of godly men will infuse dispassion in you. 93) Those who can defeat Nidra (sleep) and Ninda (insult) i.e. those who are not affected by these two, are well qualified for practicing Bhakthi. 94) Other people or creatures are not responsible for our sorrows. The actual cause for man’s sorrows lies in his ignorance and self-conceit. 95) Man does not see his own faults. Do not see fault in others. It is our own fault that we attribute to others. Gradually, when the mind becomes pure, we will be able to see our faults. 96) We must be grateful to those great men who point out our faults. 97) To do only good to others, is the habit of great men. We should never forget the invaluable service they are putting in. 98) There is a great fault in man; and that is to think of himself as faultless. 99) Satsang (company of holy men) and Bhajan (prayers to God) will help man to correct his faults. 100) Listening to the stories of God and rendering service to great men make the human life purposeful. 101) If you do not get the good fortune to serve great men directly, you will not be able to control your mind and to root out Vasanas (innate tendencies) in you. 102) Love every living thing in the creation of God. If that is not possible, love the very Creator. Loving the God’s creations is not different from loving God. 103) Talk less. Don’t waste your energy by talking excessively. 104) Man runs after this world madly. If he can turn back and direct the chase towards God, that is to say, if his attachment to the world becomes attachment to God, he or that Jiva (soul) becomes Siva (God) 105) The grace of great men falls under three classes. The life of those who come within the glance of great men is definitely fulfilled. It will make the time of death gruesome. 117) Try to develop good qualities like control of the mind, righteousness etc. gradually. That will make your life happy. 118) A luxurious life, that is, a life fully immersed in worldly pleasures, is verily the axe that cuts at the root of devotion. 119) When your mind becomes the growing field of good qualities, you will easily come in contact with great men. 120) Keep your eyes pure and without blemish. If you do so that eye cannot find fault in any person or thing. 121) Ego is the cause for man’s downfall. 122) Change or conversion of attire is not essential. But conversion of mind is unavoidable. 123) Don’t be controlled by the mind; controlling the mind is fulfillment of life. 124) One can become a great man by controlling his mind. 125) Death will undoubtedly occur at any time. A human being worth the name should always keep this in memory . 126) Don’t try to see and correct the faults in others. A man, worth the name, is he who makes earnest efforts to correct himself. When we correct ourselves, the whole world gets corrected. 127) Renunciation confers immense spiritual powers on us. We are unhappy when worldly objects leave us. But if we leave them voluntarily, we will get boundless happiness. 128) If you want to establish friendship with God, you have necessarily to give up your friendship with Kama(desires) 129) God is the only person worthy of our love. 130) Grief always causes uneasiness. 131) Those who engage themselves in worldly pleasures on the belief that such pleasures are true and lasting, they forget God. More over, they look down upon God as insignificant and insult Him. 132) When we are in grief, God remains with us in a subtle form and looks after our welfare. 133) Good traits like absence of hatred, love and respect to others will subdue negative qualities like enmity, jealousy etc. 134) God loves only those persons whose habits are most beautiful and friendly to all. 135) Do not make others cry. May thou appear before me at the time of my death” 141) Real human characteristic lies in surrendering one’s mind and intellect to God. 142) Sinful persons will, at the time of their death, experience such excruciating pain as caused by the stinging of 200 million scorpions. 143) The verses (in Bhagavatham) sung by Bhishma in praise of Lord Sri Krishna are matchless and are worthy of being learned by heart. This is renowned as “Bhishma Sthava Raja Sthothram”. 144) The final test in a man’s life is his death. He who leads a pure life will have a marvelous death too. That means he has won the test. As death can happen any moment, the fact is that the winners of this test will win every moment of their life. As they have conquered Time, they know the value of time. Every moment of their life is spent purposefully. It should, there fore, be our effort to spend our lives for noble purposes only. 145)The desire for worldly pleasures is deep-rooted in us, through the past many births. The Second Skandha
177. Those people, who deserve to be accepted as disciples will definitely get the opportunity to meet a good spiritual master. 178. Only a Mahatma can distinguish another Mahatma. 179. Spiritual practices should start from early childhood. Singing songs in praise of God is powerful equipment for spiritual progress. 180. Be happy, every moment. Then you can meet death with a smile. 181. What you think constantly, that will be in your mind at the time of death also. 182. Man spends most of his time for sleeping, earning wealth and talking. Some people spend time for study. The more you study the more you acquire bookish knowledge. And bookish knowledge enhances the ego of man. 183. Nothing is gained by thinking of the past. Better concentrate your thoughts on the present. 184. Death gives previous notices before its arrival. But nobody pays any heed to these notices. When the hairs become gray, take notice that death is about to grasp you shortly. When teeth fall, eye-sight diminishes and backbone bends, it should be understood that death is fast approaching. 185. If the star Arundhathi is not visible to our eyes, it means our death comes within one year. If, in a dream, we see ourselves falling in a mud pond, death is due within nine months. Seeing ourselves riding on a donkey in the dream signifies death within six months. If, after inserting the fingers in our ears, we can’t hear the hissing noise inside, death will occur within eight days. 186. Frequently advise your mind in this way:-“Oh! Mind! You have no relations except God. You belong to none and none belongs to you. Do not forget this fact. 187. Enjoyment of material pleasures does not give contentment. When death is imminent, one should renounce the world with strong determination. 195. Practice of any Yoga without Bhakti (devotion) will lead only to diseases, both physically and mentally. 196. Without steadfastness in Bhagavatha Dharma( life devoted to God) vices like greed and anger cannot be rooted out.. 197. Happiness is impossible, if mind is not purified through service of God. 198. Greed and anger cannot be destroyed without the strong faith that this world itself is another form of God. 199. Devotion to God is nothing but loving all creatures in the world. 200. Devotion in the form of servitude will quickly develop humility in our mind, which is most essential for Bhakti. First, think of the holy feet of the Lord with all humility. Then think of the Lord’s beautiful face and all other parts of the body. 201. Don’t worry if you are not able to think of God; but avoid thinking too much of the world. 202. Vision of God is not possible without service of the Lord. 203. If at first darkness is seen while meditating on God, steadily go ahead, thinking of the favorite form of God. Also recite the favorite Names of God. Mind will come under control soon. Establish the form of the Lord in Budhi. (Memory). When it is well established, mind will become steady. At that time, the form of God will also appear clearly in the mind. This is Bhakti yoga( union with God through devotion) 204. Engage yourself in all activities, keeping the mind fixed on Lord Sri Krishna. 205. Give up the desires in worldly objects totally, step by step. 206. Surrender our senses to the Lord, treating them as flowers to be offered to God. 213. Life in mother’s womb is equal to life in the hell. 214. Devoid of austerities, down fall is certain. 215. Man should harness all his strength for the service of Sree Hari. Sravanam(listening to the stories of God)) keerthanam(praising the glories of God) and smaranam( reflecting on God) , these comprise man’s real wealth.
Third Skandha
216. Keep the mind always engaged in spiritual activities. If the mind is allowed to rest even for short while, it is likely to slip into sinful thoughts. 217. Eating food is not a sin. Later, it changes in accordance with its associations in the world. While good associations give fulfillment of life, bad associations bring down-fall. Association with people leading luxurious life makes a man greedy of material pleasures. On the other hand, association with spiritually evolved men makes him spiritually inclined. Bad habits, once acquired cannot be changed easily. So come what may, let the mind and intellect be never allowed to go astray from God. Always remember the following words of Sri Bhagavan:- Mayyeva mana aadhtswa, mayi budhim nivesaya Nivasishyasi mayyeva atha urdhwam na samsaya: (Geeta 12-8) (Repose your mind in me, let your intellect enter into me, then you shall, without doubt live in me here and hereafter) 228. Follow the teachings of great men in your life. 229. By thinking of the great Rishis early in the morning, their good qualities will enter into our mind. 230. Robbery and immoral life are great sins. But it is our own responsibility, to avoid bad company. 234. God’s grace will not be available, until worldly pleasures are given up. 235. Penance destroys all sins and makes the life pure. It is the duty of house-holders to look after the house-hold during eleven months of the year and to do penance in solitude at a holy place during the remaining one month. 236. The first step towards penance is control of tongue. 237. Where there is love, there even the life of a beggar would be enjoyable without hesitation. 238. Those who rob the wealth of others are ‘ Dhritharashtras’ 239. A son who follows the path of virtue can open the gates to the heavenly abode for his parents. 240. One who does no work and lives on the food provided by others, is robber. One who captures the wealth of others and lives on that is also robber. A man having means, but failing to entertain guests properly is robber. One who cooks food for himself (without sharing it with others) is robber. One who eats food without offering it to the God of fire is also robber. 241. Greed is the father of sin and selfishness is its mother. 242.
